Cut down on food waste
Over a quarter of waste in a typical general rubbish bin at home is food.
If we avoid producing food that we don't eat, we can save the land, water, and energy that would have been used to make it.
Cutting down on your food waste can also save the average family of four over £60 per month.
Top tips for reducing your food waste
- Plan before you buy - make a shopping list and only buy what you need. Doing meal plans will help.
- Make sure you’re storing your food properly to keep it fresh. Your fridge should be less than 5C. Check Love Food Hate Waste’s A to Z of storing food.
- Freeze food that you can’t use in time. You can freeze food at any time up to its use by date, then use it within 24 hours after it’s defrosted. Take a look at Love Food Hate Waste’s foods you never knew you could freeze.
- Get creative with leftovers. Throw them in soups, curries, stir fries or risotto, instead of the bin.
- Keep your fridge organised so you can clearly see what food you have and know how long it’s been in there.
