Solar carports powering council buildings

Car port

Solar carports at the council’s Turnpike and Swinton Hall Road depots are now generating electricity, helping to power the office buildings on site.

1,575 solar panels have been installed on top of steel car port frames across both depots. This is set to generate over 575,000 kilowatt hours of low-carbon electricity per year, which will be used by council and NHS offices, with the remaining electricity being exported to the grid.

The car ports will save 270 tonnes of carbon every year and is a significant step in our journey to becoming carbon neutral.

The Turnpike Depot carports house 1,145 solar panels, which are capable of generating over 411,288 kilowatt hours of electricity each year.

The Swinton Hall Road depot car park has 430 solar panels, which are capable of generating over 164,255 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.
